Gone Fishing: The Struggles of Retirement
Hows retirement? It must be good to be able to sleep in each morning.
I envy you.Do you have any travel plans?Hows your golf game?I have heard these comments many times in the last six months, and as I respond, I deal with a flood of feelings and thoughts. It is assumed that I have come to that time of life when I can take it easy, do as I please, and wait until God calls me home to glory. Retirement is perceived by some to be a soft life with no more workplace responsibilities. Life goals are complete. These questions can be interpreted as demeaning, degrading, or even condescending, especially by the person who has had an active life. That person may respond with anger, feeling put down, and with disgust over others lack of understanding. The dictionary doesn’t help by defining retire in this manner: to withdraw from business or public life so as to live at leisure on ones income, savings, or pension.Many of the miss perceptions of retirement are created by people who have reached this stage of life. They may say, Ive been there, done that, and I don’t want to be involved,or Dont ask me to do anythingIve done my time.

Detroit Medical Center ? Wayne State University Joint Residency Programs: Progress Made, But Work Remains
On November 22, 2006, the Detroit Medical Center (“DMC”) and Wayne State University (“WSU”) announced a temporizing resolution to a long-standing contractual dispute. This dispute threatened both the future of the DMC/WSU jointly sponsored residency programs and patient access to quality care in Michigan. The resolution, in the form of a legally binding “Memorandum of Understanding,” provided basic provisions to serve as the framework for a final, definitive agreement between the parties in the future. This article will address the dispute between DMC and WSU from the perspective of resident training (also known as “graduate medical education”); the current status of the DMC/WSU jointly-sponsored residency programs as defined by the Memorandum of Understanding; and the residents’ role in effectuating a resolution of the dispute between DMC and WSU.

Increasing numbers of people are using the Internet for the provision of all sorts of health services, from prescribing, through consulting to setting up automated self-treatment programs. But what about utilizing it for education and therapy? After all, in theory, the crowning form of cognitive behavioral therapy should be “realistic reality therapy.” By simply having on your wrap-around sound and vision multimedia headset you can be instantly enchanted to a cliff edge, soar in a plane thousands of feet above the ground or be environed by a gathering of thousands of spiders depending on your phobia. And the ultimate form of online education should be fully interactive, case established and student driven, all of which I now use in my instructing in Second Life
